Raw or processed honey?

Raw or processed honey?

When looking for your next honey jar, the main thing to do is about processed or raw honey. Many people mistakenly believe that consuming unprocessed raw honey is dangerous and automatically and unknowingly buy processed honey. Some people think that there is no difference between these two types of honey. There is a lot of information about this; So we thought we could give them to you and clear up some of these ambiguities for you.

How is raw honey made?

Raw honey is collected from the beehive and filtered to remove excess items such as wax and then poured into a jar. Bees make amazing honey and we keep it that way. Each jar of raw honey is harvested at the right time, and we only take what the other bees do not need. This makes our bees happy and healthy.

There are a few more steps before packing a bottle of honey

After harvesting honey from honeycombs, the honey is pasteurized and strongly filtered. Pasteurization involves heating honey to remove yeast that is naturally found in nectar. Removal of yeast eliminates the possible possibility of honey fermentation and slows down the granulation process.

While there is no risk of consuming fermented honey, pasteurized honey stays in its liquid state longer than raw honey, which is especially useful if it comes out of a pressed bottle. This is in contrast to the dairy industry, which requires pasteurization of these products to kill harmful bacteria. High acidity and low moisture in raw honey prevent the growth of bacteria and other harmful organisms.

Further refining of honey after pasteurization removes excess bubbles and creates a transparent product that many consumers find aesthetically appealing. In short, raw honey is what it looks like; That means the same raw! The processed honey is heated and filtered to stay liquid for longer. Although this helps honey, it does not prevent granulation forever. Gently heat the granulated honey to liquefy it.

Dietary differences between processed honey and raw honey

The processing of any food, including honey, affects its nutritional value. No increase in filtration and pasteurization means that raw honey has a higher nutritional value than the processed sample, which includes: amino acids, vitamin B6, thiamine, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese. Phosphorus, potassium, sodium, zinc, enzymes and antioxidants called polyphenols. Polyphenols help fight serious illnesses, including heart disease and certain types of cancer. The high heat of pasteurization destroys most of these beneficial enzymes, antioxidants, and certain vitamins in honey.

Processed honey may contain hidden substances

To keep up with the high demand for cheap honey, some of the commercial honey you see in stores is imported from abroad. More concerns about additives such as high fructose corn syrup, rice syrup or other sweeteners that are mixed in the final product and are not shown on the label. Shipping honey abroad increases the environmental impact of the product. Therefore, our raw honey has the least transport to reach your home.

Hygiene tips by eating honey

Raw honey and processed honey can contain a bacterium known as Clostridium botulinum. These bacteria are especially harmful and potentially deadly to children under one year of age; Because their digestive system has not grown enough to control bacteria. Clostridium botulinum causes a disease known as botulism. We recommend that you do not give your raw honey (or any other honey) to infants under one year of age.
